Photography Exhibition: Hipster & Otaku

“힙스터 (Hipster)”라는 단어는 1990년대 이후 중산층 보헤미안적 삶을 추구하는 젊은 계층을 지칭하며 서양의 각종 미디어와 광고를 통해 주목받게 되었다. 힙스터들은 흔히들 진보적 정치적 입장을 가지고 메인스트림 소비 문화나 큰 기업에 반발하며 자신들의 “개념있음”을 과시하는 경우가 많다. 또한 빈티지 패션, 인디 음악 등 트랜디함과 스타일리시함 또한 “힙스터”들의 중요한 특징이다. 아이러니하게도 이러한 트랜드를 반영하여 대형 브랜드들은 앞다투어 “힙스터” 스타일 제품들을 선보이고 있다.

반면, “오타쿠 (Otaku)”는 일본에서 유래한 단어로, 본래 “집”을 의미하며 방에만 틀어박혀 현실보다는 애니메이션, 게임, 아이돌 같은 문화에 빠져사는 사람을 지칭한다.  본디 이 단어는 사회 부적응자라는 부정적 의미로 주로 사용되었지만 미디어를 통해 점차 “매니아 (mania)” 와 같은 맥락으로 어떠한 것에 깊은 관심과 애정을 갖고 있는 것을 표현하기 위해 점차 긍정적인 의미로서 사용이 빈번해지고 있다. 오타쿠 문화의 중요한 특징은 미디어 및 제품이 인간관계를 대체하는 현상인데, 연애 감정이나 우정과 같은 지극히 개인적인 감정들 마저도 상품화 되어가는 현대사회의 극단적 단면을 보여주고 있는 것이다.

이렇듯 힙스터와 오타쿠는 미국과 일본이라는 전혀 다른 문화에서 각각 발생한 단어로 전혀 다른 맥락 속에서 발전한 신생어들이지만 소비지상주의적 포스트 모던 사회 새로운 라이프 스타일의 표상이라는 점에서 묘하게도 공통 분모가 있다. 또한 “마이너함”과 “메이저함” 사이에서 “쿨함”이 “구림”이 되고 “구림”이 “쿨함”이 되어가는 권력 투쟁과 문화적 역학관계를 지켜보는 일은 꽤나 흥미로운 일이다.

CICA미술관에서 열리는 힙스터 & 오타쿠 현대사진전은 15명의 국내외 아티스트 – LaTurbo Avedon, Kami Bugnet, 최서희 (Seohee Choi), Gian Cruz, Melissa Eder, Tomer Eliash, Eric J. Glasthal, Timothy Hutchings, Blond Jenny, 이예섬 (Lee Yeseom), Jee Lee, Maya Puskaric, Liam Racine, Joseph Sobel , Rachel Wolfson의 작품을 전시한다. 그들이 활동해온 지역, 혹은 문화에 따라 작품 속에서 “오타쿠”혹은 “힙스터”적인 요소들을 찾아볼 수 있으며 그 속에서 현대 포스트모던 사회를 살고 있는 젊은이들의 문화 (Youth Culture)적 표상들을 발견할 수 있다.

 

The term hipster, which refers to a subculture of middle-class bohemian youth, has been frequently used by the media since the 1990s. Hipsters tend to show off their intelligence and their progressive political views while rejecting mainstream consumer culture. They are also known to be stylish and trendy and to enjoy vintage fashion and indie music. Ironically, mainstream brands are now rushing to launch numerous products that reflect their style.

The Japanese term otaku refers to youth who shut themselves in their houses and are addicted to Japanese manga, games, or idol stars. The term was first used negatively to indicate a social misfit, but now, it has started to appear in the media in a more positive context to describe an enthusiast who has a deep interest and understanding of something. In otaku culture, the media and products replace human relationships, while commercializing personal feelings such as love and friendship.

Even though these terms originate in different cultures and within different contexts, both suggest new lifestyles in consumerist postmodern societies. In addition, there is a constant power struggle between major and minor cultures and subversions of “being cool.”

CICA museum’s photography exhibition, Hipster & Otaku, features 15 international artists, including LaTurbo Avedon, Kami Bugnet, Seohee Choi, Gian Cruz, Melissa Eder, Tomer Eliash, Eric J. Glasthal, Timothy Hutchings, Blond Jenny, Lee Yeseom, Jee Lee, Maya Puskaric, Liam Racine, Joseph Sobel, and Rachel Wolfson. “Hipster” or “otaku” elements are rooted in their works and reflect the cultures and regions they are from. These works are emblems of postmodern youth culture.
