사진가 한영수가 세상을 떠난 지 벌써 15년이라는 세월이 흘렀다. 지난 15년 동안 나는 한영수의 딸이 아닌 한영수의 사진을 사랑하는 팬의 마음으로 한 걸음씩 그의 사진들을 정리해왔다. 한 사진가의 일생을 정리한다는 것은 비록 가장 가까운 가족이라 할지라도 결코 쉬운 일은 아니었고, 짧은 시간에 끝낼 수 있는 일도 아니었다. 그러나 한 장의 사진, 한 컷의 필름을 대할 때마다 그가 지나온 발자취를 작가의 시선으로 바라볼 수 있었고, 그것은 한 사진가가 지나온 날들을 타임머신을 타고 지켜보는 것과 같았으며, 마치 한편의 오래된 영화를 보는 것처럼 흥미롭고도 즐거운 일이었다.
개성의 부유한 집안의 장손으로 태어난 한영수는 어린 시절 그림에 재능을 보였고, 학교의 미술선생님이 집으로 직접 부모를 찾아와 전문적인 회화수업을 권유하기도 하였다. 이러한 미술적 재능을 가지고 그는 취미로 사진에 관심을 갖게 되었고, 한국 사진사 초기의 중요한 리얼리즘 사진단체인 신선회에 가입하면서 보다 본격적으로 사진에 심취하게 되었다. 그러던 중 백화점 홍보실에 근무하던 친구의 권유로 우연히 홍보 카탈로그의 사진을 찍어준 것이 인연이 되어 상업사진을 시작하게 되었으며, 그의 사진들이 좋은 반응을 얻게 되자 본격적으로 ‘한영수사진연구소’라는 이름의 스튜디오를 열었다. 그의 상업사진은 큰 성공을 거두게 되었고, 국내외에서 여러 차례 광고대상을 수상하는 등 한국의 대표적인 상업사진가로 이름을 날리게 되었다. 또한 상업사진가로 활동하는 중에도 그는 풍경사진에 심취해 꾸준히 작업을 이어갔다. 이러한 활동의 결과로 1990년대에 들어서면서 수많은 사진 공모전의 심사위원을 역임하며 한국의 대표적인 사진가로서의 위치를 확고히 했으며, 1999년에는 서울시로부터 ‘올해의 문화인상’을 받게 되었다. 이렇게 사진가 한영수는 리얼리즘사진으로 출발해 광고사진, 풍경사진에 이르기까지 폭넓은 사진 분야에 걸쳐 활동하면서 동시대의 다른 사진가들과는 차별되는 독특한 작품을 남겼다. 이 모든 것들은 천부적인 미술에 대한 재능과, 많은 사진 서적을 탐독하면서 얻는 후천적인 노력에 의한 결과였다.
이 사진집을 준비하면서 많은 분들의 도움을 받았다, 특히 귀중한 원고를 통해 사진가의 작품에 새로운 해석을 불어넣어준 이영준 선생께 감사의 말씀을 드린다. 또한 예술가의 아내로 평탄하지 않은 삶을 이어왔지만, 그 누구보다 남편의 사진을 사랑한 사진가의 아내 피정자 여사의 전폭적인 지원 없이는 이 책을 출판할 수 없었을 것이다.
사진가 한영수의 15주기를 맞이하여 한영수문화재단에서 처음으로 출간하는 이 사진집은 앞으로 계속 이어질 ‘한영수 전집’의 첫 권으로, 한영수문화재단은 다양한 그의 시선과 작품들을 재발견하고, 전시와 출판 등 다양한 활동을 통하여 사진을 사랑하는 사람들에게 그의 사진을 소개하는 작업에 힘쓸 것이다.

Foreword

Fifteen years has already passed since photographer Han Youngsoo left this world. And for the last 15 years I have organized his photographs one by one, not as his daughter, but as an admirer of his work. Organizing the life of an artist is never easy, even if done by a close family member, and is not something that can be completed in a short period of time. I was able to see traces of his life in every negative and every photograph. Like entering a time machine to observe the photographer’s days past, it was an act as fascinating as watching classic movies.
Born the first son of a first son in a wealthy family, Han showed an aptitude for painting and drawing from a young age. This caught the attention of his teacher, who made a special home visit to suggest private painting lessons. With an inclination for the arts, Han became interested in photography as a hobby, which grew to a deeper fascination as he joined the Shinsunwhui, an early realism movement group. He got started in commercial photography by chance, as a friend who worked in marketing at a department store recommended him to shoot the store’s catalogue. His photographs were well received and he decided to establish his own studio. As Han’s fame in commercial photography grew, he began to bring home top prizes from photo competitions both at home and abroad, and quickly become an influential name in the field. His interest in landscape photography grew alongside his commercial prospects, however, and he worked on creative projects throughout this time. Han soon became a representative figure in Korean photography, serving on the juries of countless competitions in the 1990s and earning the city-awarded ‘Cultural Figure of the Year’ prize in 1999. In this way, Han found his beginnings in realism before progressing onto commercial photography, then landscape, leaving behind a collection of unique images that distinguished him from his peers even during his lifetime. All of this was the result of his innate understanding of art and the determination acquired from hours of devouring photography books.
Many people helped me in the preparation of this photo collection. I would like to give special thanks to Young June Lee, whose valued writings brought fresh analysis to the artist’s work. In addition, this book could not have been published without the whole-hearted support of Pi Chungja, Han’s wife, who loved his photographs more than anything, even if her life as his spouse was no simple feat.
Released to coincide with the 15th anniversary of Han’s death, this book is the first installation in Han Youngsoo: Completed Works, published by the Han Youngsoo Foundation. Through new publications, exhibitions, and other programming, the foundation seeks to introduce the artist’s work to all those who love photography, in order to rediscover the late Han’s varied perspectives and oeuvre.
